Papers

I write regularly on digital information management. My papers usually stress the human dimension of technology because cognitive, physical and emotional aspects of people must be taken into account when it comes to designing systems and applications to organize information.

Articles and book chapters

Jorge Franganillo. «El aparente declive del correo electrónico». ThinkEPI, 24 January 2012. Abstract

Abstract. Some companies have started to restrict the use of email with the conviction that the resulting information overload undermines productivity. However, the problem is not the tool, but excessive exchange of messages, often with irrelevant information. Therefore, the real solution is to establish appropriate management strategies and avoid excessive communication. Some initiatives are committed to moving corporate internal communication to social media, although it tends to fragment the information required to complete tasks.

Jorge Franganillo. «HTML5: el nuevo estándar básico de la web». Anuario ThinkEPI: análisis de tendencias en información y documentación, 2011, p. 261-265. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. In late 2009, the W3C stopped developing XHTML 2 and focused on HTML5 instead. Since then, there has been some confusion and heated debates about the proper markup language for future web development. HTML5 has been conceived with the aim of simplifying the designers' work and improving the sites' performance, especially on mobile devices. This paper analyzes the final draft of the HTML5 specification and discusses the most significant aspects: syntax, DOM, information gathering and presentation, and multimedia processing.

Jorge Franganillo. «Implicaciones éticas de la minería de datos». Anuario ThinkEPI: análisis de tendencias en información y documentación, 2010, p. 320-324. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Data mining is the process of analyzing large data sets to find previously undiscovered patterns and predict future actions. Data mining has many useful applications, but also has a merely exploratory approach that makes questionable the validity of certain deductions. Using personal information for predictive purposes has a direct impact on the lives of people and therefore requires acting in a framework of liability. A code of ethics is necessary.

Jorge Franganillo. «Gestión de información personal: elementos, actividades e integración». El profesional de la información, vol. 18, no. 4, July-August 2009, p. 399-406. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Personal information management (PIM) studies how people should organize and use the information they get to solve everyday needs, in order to take full advantage of personal resources (time, money, energy, attention) and thereby increase productivity and improve their quality of life. This paper presents the components and activities where PIM is articulated and describes how to promote the integration of personal information that is generally scattered in different forms, applications and devices.

Jorge Franganillo. «Contenido responsable en la Internet colaborativa». Anuario ThinkEPI: análisis de tendencias en información y documentación, 2009, p. 59-63. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. The easiness with which any contribution can be published on the collaborative Web favours the spreading of inappropriate or offensive content, emerged from anonimity. User-generated material posted on forums and other participatory spaces must be moderated, without confusing control with censorship. The lack of control over content causes harmful consequences and it's not a technical limitation, but a negligence that can be penalized by law, in spite of some legal vacuum.

Jorge Franganillo. «Ni libros vencedores ni libros vencidos». Anuario ThinkEPI: análisis de tendencias en información y documentación, 2009, p. 30-33. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Some alarming voices insist that ebooks will displace print books, despite electronic gadgets can't surpass, or even equal, those qualities that make paper books ideal for prolonged reading. In the future, paper will still be a better material for some tasks, so it seems reasonable to think we will keep on using it.

Jorge Franganillo. «La industria editorial frente al libro electrónico». El profesional de la información, vol. 17, no. 4, July-August 2008, p. 416-417. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Books, reading and the publishing industry are experiencing changes motivated by technological advancement. The content has been separated from the material and, therefore, the publishing industry has had to alter its logistic structure, based of physical distribution until recently. Print on demand and online bookstores are now meeting new needs: they have increased the possibilities of visibility and circulation of editorial production, and they have suppressed geographic and physical barriers.

Jorge Franganillo. «Depósitos: un factor psicológico de desconfianza». BiD: textos universitaris de biblioteconomia i documentació, no. 20, June 2008. Abstract

Resumen. Among the reasons for the reluctance of many authors to include their works in institutional archives is the negative feelings caused by words like file or repository. This text reflects on how language affects our actions and what the role of science and language institutions should be with regard to special terminology.

Jorge Franganillo. «Necesidad de buenas prácticas en la redifusión de contenido digital». Anuario ThinkEPI: análisis de tendencias en información y documentación, 2008, p. 17-19. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Distributing news summaries by means of content syndication significantly improved access to current information, but has had only moderate acceptance despite optimistic predictions. Inadequate attention to good practice by many content producers have limited the usefulness of content syndication. In order for this redistribution method to become a truly beneficial tool, producers must develop best practice.

Jorge Franganillo, Lola Burgos. «Blocs a la biblioteca penitenciària: un taller de dinamització cultural». Item: revista de biblioteconomia i documentació, no. 45, January-March 2007, p. 87-104. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. A work for cultural promotion, that began in 2006 in the Youth Penitentiary Center in Barcelona, encourages a group of prisoners to create and publish blogs. The objectives were to promote education among the prisoners and improve their information level, encourage them to read and write more, awaken or strengthen their technological abilities, and broathen the contact they have with the outside world.

Abstract. The MatPromo database was created in October 2002 as a project of IFLA's Management & Marketing Section. The objective of the project consists of creating a database of images of objects and documents designed for promoting all kinds of libraries in any country. The images are described and are accessible through a user-friendly interface for searching internationally. The aim of the database is to facilitate ideas for promotional campaigns of library services. This article attempts to introduce MatPromo and explain its technical characteristics, content, and usefulness for librarians around the world.

Jorge Franganillo. «GPS, o la lección del Dakar». Uno, 2 de gener de 2012, p. 18. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Dakar is a competition that stands out from other motor events because of its countless peculiarities. An example of this is that drivers are not allowed to use GPS to find their way. Instead, they must follow the directions written on a paper roll. GPS, which is useful in innumerable areas, is held by the U.S. government, which can disrupt or modify the signals if they want to, as it has done on occasion. One day it might happen that our dependence on this positioning system, whose absence in the Dakar makes this adventure even more adventurous, causes a massive disorientation.

Jorge Franganillo. «En la ciencia de lo secreto». Uno, 7 December 2011, p. 17. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Cryptography has had a significant historical influence for over two millennia. It's an ancient science which was already used by Romans, among others, to keep their communications safe from enemies. For centuries, until the 1970s, it was a black art practised by only a few governments and armies. It is now a well-established discipline that is taught in universities, it's available for use by businesses and individuals, and it protects many areas of everyday life. This ancient technique now faces the threat of quantum computing, which might cause the collapse of the cryptographic techniques known to date.

Jorge Franganillo. «Sobre el boca-oreja en la web». Uno, 8 December 2009, p. 21. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Consumers are becoming increasingly skeptical of marketing promises: more and more people avoid buying anything unless they first read others' opinion on the Internet. Advertising makeup is no longer effective: consumers no longer listen to the company, but they listen to each other. Companies are affected by this situation, so they have to rethink their communication strategy to control their online identity and reputation.

Jorge Franganillo. «La carrera por la atención». Uno, 27 May 2009, p. 9. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Abstract. Information processing has been a critical element in all forms of social development but the current conditions of life, sharply technological, mean that the fact of creating, processing and transmitting information is today a source of productivity and power. Nowadays, people work in an environment of information competition: much of the information circulating is delivered in order to gain visibility. But attention is a precious and scarce commodity because everyone directs their attention according to personal priorities.

Congreso Europeo de Tecnologías de la Información en la Educación y en la Sociedad: una visión crítica. (3rd: February 2012: Barcelona). Paper. Barcelona: Esbrina, 2012, p. 504-506. Adobe Acrobat document Abstract

Resumen. «Accessible teaching documents» is a second step on an initiative to promote best practices in the preparation of accessible teaching material by university professors. This initiative started with the publication of the Guide to accessible digital content, which explains basic techniques to make accessible office documents. «Accessible teaching documents» goes further on this initial objective, providing templates for the creation of office documents, and easy procedures to create alternate versions of them. Those alternate versions will include changes in color, fonts or other presentational attributes and also conversions to different digital formats, thus promoting inclusive education in the university by the integration of alternative formats in everyday contents.

Universal Learning Design International Conference (February 2011: Brno). Paper. PowerPoint presentation Abstract

Abstract. This paper presents a joint initiative of the University of Lleida and the University of Barcelona (Spain) encouraging inclusive education in the university by the promotion of alternative formats. The initiative was formalized in a set of 13 guides published in the Guide to accessible digital content (in Catalan and Spanish) that presents detailed information to create digital documents accessible to people with disabilities. The guides cover common content editing tools (Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft PowerPoint), the conversion to PDF and the publication of accessible web content via the FCKEditor available on LMS such as Sakai, Moodle or OpenCMS. The initiative also includes the creation of supporting material like accessible templates for common document types in teaching. The main audience of the guides is university professors who must meet accessibility standards in their e-learning environments. However, the guidelines may also be useful to anyone who has the obligation or the desire to have their digital documents and publications on the Internet made according to the principles of universal design.
